LOOKING BACK ON ROYALTY FREE
````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Ever since Royalty Free stock photography came into the market back in the mid '90s, I've received numerous e-mails from photographers asking me not to mention or promote Royalty Free in my writings.
Since PhotoSource International is an organization whose purpose is to help both photo suppliers and photobuyers in their sales and search of illustrative photography, I'm committed to reporting on every approach to stock photography, from the perspectives of photobuyer as well as photographer.
Today we can discern more precisely what markets Royalty Free can serve, now that the dust has settled and RF photography has made a place for itself. RF reveals itself as putting forth photos that fall into the commonplace, not very unique, run-of-the-mill categories. RF photos easily fill the needs of regional and local advertising, calendar, and post card companies.
The reality of the stock photography business is that not every photobuyer needs a blockbuster image every time. More importantly, many photobuyers, whether in the commercial or editorial field, are not prepared to pay premium fees for stock photography. Their budgets do not allow it
ANOTHER ADVANTAGE to specializing. As your stock photo files grow in your chosen areas of specialization, so does your knowledge. You become more valuable as a resource to publishers. You’ll find that they’ll be asking you to write articles based on your know-how in your specialization areas. Whenever you can offer both writing and photography to an editor, you go to the top of the "Available Freelancers List." Don’t feel comfortable stringing words together? Remember that you can start with brief articles accompanying your photos. Take advantage of the writing course(s) available on the Internet or at your local Votech school or college. -RE
MailWasher Free. This software program allows you to view incoming e-mail before it is downloaded to your computer by your e-mail program. You can also have the option of "bouncing" messages so that your e-mail address appears to be invalid. (The spammer will then delete your address as "not worth the trouble." Try out "MailWasher" at (http://www.mailwasher.net) is an anti-spam tool that allows you to view incoming messages on your POP3 mail server before they're downloaded to the computer by your e-mail program. Not only can you preview and delete unwanted messages right off the server, but you have the option of "bouncing" messages so that your e-mail address appears to be invalid.
Theoretically, this should eventually result in less spam, as your "inactive" address gets removed from bulk mailing lists. MailWasher "learns" over time to recognize junk and will make suggestions about messages that should be deleted or bounced. Support is planned for Hotmail and AOL Mail. The download is free for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP. You have the option of making a donation to the developer if you find the program useful.
