Are your visitors Coming Back...?
GET THEM TO RETURN
So, you've just got your first website up and running. Good for you!
Time to sit back and relax? You can. But only for a while. Then it's time to prepare for step two of having your own site.
The answer to getting repeat visitors -- who will turn into repeat customers -- is to regularly keep new content coming to your site.
Your site is like a storefront window, and you want to make sure you have new, fresh products here all the time. Getting new photos uploaded, adding new content and periodically sweeping out the old, are great ways to make visitors come back often.
By adding fresh content, new images, and making sure your site always is as fresh as it can be, you are accomplishing something really good. You are making sure that visitors to your site can look forward to seeing new and different material. You are showing everyone your up-to-date work and that you have fresh photos to offer.

TRAVEL NOTES
```````````````````````
The Year Ahead
With the winter now well and truly upon us, I resort to getting on with those things I put off at other times of the year when I'm out shooting more. Not that travel photography is confined only to 'sunny' times, far from it, but that's my personal preference. (Many travel photographers do well from snow and ice, after all there are large parts of the globe which get a lot of it, and so photographing it for travel brochures and promotions is profitable.)
Personally, I get on mainly with things like the backlog of cataloguing and getting slides to photo libraries that I just didn't do earlier, a case of better late than never. I also make great use of my scanner, after the necessary image cleaning and retouching, burn the images onto CD and get them off to another photo library, this one on-line which accepts only digital delivery.
LIGHTING LESSONS
Something else I do is visit the great art galleries we have in London, spending some time looking at paintings from the great past masters of image such as Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Wright of Derby -- all experts in lighting, composition and telling a story long before photography was invented. Wherever you are there may be great galleries too. Go and spend a little time there and observe what people who thought out and placed every single element in a picture managed to do, with no limitation as to composition, color, light angles, just their imagination. One huge plus for a painter, incidentally, is that the sun (or any key light) can come from several different angles at the same time, although very slightly.
FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR
Very importantly, I plan out the year ahead for shooting, although nothing hard and fast, I like to maintain flexibility. This year flexibility will be very important, in that if the war with Iraq transpires along with the death and destruction it would inevitably bring, the whole world of travel will be in a state of flux.
However, let's hope for the best and work for peace. Happy Shooting!
BUSINESS NOTEPAD
`````````````````````````````
PHOTOBUYERS at large publishing houses will often use certain photosupplier agencies instead of you, an individual photographer -- not because your work is not good, but because of the "arrangements" the Operations Manager has made with a photosupplying company whose secret is to give deep discounts on high volume purchases (sort of a Wal-Mart type of deal). Photobuyers and researchers are instructed by their companies to make their selections with that particular photo agency when at all possible. Whether the month's total image: purchases are Royalty-Free or Rights-Protected, the discount is made on volume. There's nothing illegal about this. It's business as usual. However, one thing these massive photosupplying agencies can't do is supply the highly specialized and specific photos that only individual editorial photographers can supply. SOLUTION: Place your scenics, landscapes, etc. with a large stock house that deals in volume with its buyers. Market your specialized, content specific photos yourself to a Market List of buyers you've built up (through research) who you know are always in need of specialized pictures in subject areas that you like to work with. –RE
