Sell To Both Markets
Q: You say in your book, "Sell & Resell..." that one should specialize in certain areas. That sounds good. What if right now in my stock file I have all sorts of generalized photography? Should I market those to many types of markets, or should I just start shooting material for specific markets, and forget about marketing what I have?
- - - -
As in my book, "Sell & ReSell Your Photos," in Chapters 2 and 3, I show you how to determine what your marketing strength area actually is. This is the area you should specialize in (you may have two or three major areas) -- because you have great interest in this area(s). Thanks to your interest you're no doubt quite knowledgeable, and speak the language of buyers who focus on those areas, whether astronomy, nursing, hang gliding, etc.
Yes, this is where you should start specializing. Photobuyers will be happy to learn you have a deep selection of photos in their particular interest area. Other photographers won't have coverage as deep. The buyers would rather shop with you, with your many photos of the subject area, rather than have to contact several different photographers who might each have just a few pictures.
As for your other pictures that are all across the board, as they say in the design shops, you are in luck. The Internet has introduced a new way of marketing these general pictures. List your photos in a text-based website such as<www.photosource.com/bank>, the PhotoSourceBANK. There, if you enter in highly specific keywords, photobuyers will find that one specific picture they are looking for. In other words, don't list "bird," or "woodpecker," but "pileated woodpecker in winter."
Increasing numbers of photobuyers are turning to a database like the PhotoSourceBANK, and its sister website, PhotoSourceFOLIO, or the print directory, the PhotoSourceBOOK 2003. These photo search resources save them time, when looking for the source of a highly specific picture. Good luck!

PAPARAZZI-PROOF ENGLAND. The right to privacy became part of English law when England incorporated the European Convention on Human Rights into its own law in the fall of 2000. Recently, Catherine Zeta-Jones, the movie star, filed a lawsuit with the High Court in London, along with her husband, Michael Douglas, protesting the publication of unauthorized photos of their wedding in the English celebrity magazine, Hello!
Although the couple had arranged for tight security for photo taking, nevertheless, a clever paparazzi with a miniature camera got several grainy pictures which were then rushed into a special issue of Hello! Magazine. Zeta-Jones and Douglas perceived the pictures as unflattering, and the layout in poor taste.
If the couple prevail in their suit, the case could set a precedent that would move England toward a Continental system of privacy. That is, the news media would be hard-pressed to publish images or details of public figures’ private lives without permission.
In the USA, the First Amendment allows that known celebrities, politicians and other persons in the limelight, can be photographed providing the photographer follows state and federal laws, such as trespassing restrictions. Thanks to Dan Ambrose

Trials, Tribulations & the Telephone
Don't Call Me; We'll Call You
Once upon a time came the telephone. And then came the masses to use this new device to ease their burden. And then it became very popular, so much so that almost every family had one (or more). And life was good. And then came the telemarketers, and life was bad (at least for those answering the phone at dinner to hear yet another automated pitch for personal hygiene).
And then came the revolt! The masses demanded of their government to establish a national "do not call" list, so the trod-upon could place their name only once in only one list and be forever freed from the awful burden of incessant telephonic interruptions. And the government responded. Senators approved and congresspersons hailed the new decree. But wait! Not to be outdone, the telemarketers sued in federal court to block the wondrous list. "Why should we be banned from using this ubiquitous device that the masses have to answer and thus hear our message? There are already 27 different lists in 27 states, and our own national volunteer 'do not call' list run by our own Direct Marketing Association. Isn't that enough?" (fade to black) To be continued....
Backup, Backup, Backup
I sure keep saying that a lot, and backing up your computer data continues to be one of those tasks that often remains undone. Or worse, it's set up as an automated task run at night and taken for granted that it's working. Maybe you ought to test one of your backups to see if the data is really there. Try restoring some of the data to an alternate location (so you don't overwrite your current data) and then look at the "restored" files to see if the content is really there. I recall one backup (a network backup) that reported all files backed up, and even listed the filenames and their sizes in the log file. However, upon doing a test restore, the files and their sizes were restored--it looked good on disk--but all the files were blank! That's right, not a single one contained any info at all, even though they all had various file sizes and dates when viewed in the folder. The problem? An incompatibility between the backup software and the version of the network operating system. Had a test restore not been
performed, when crunch time came and the backup was really needed, it would have been useless.

Copyright Awareness Week
by Joel Hecker
In April of 2002 the Copyright Society of the U.S.A., of which I am a long time member and past Trustee, launched a program aimed at educating school-aged children about the importance of copyright. It was called Copyright Awareness Week and was a great success. As a result, the program has been enlarged and made into an annual event. This year Copyright Awareness Week was held on March 9th through March 15th, 2003.
MAKING YOUTH AWARE
The mission of Copyright Awareness Week is to create a greater awareness among the youth of America about the protection and use of creative works. During Copyright Awareness Week, copyright experts and educators throughout the country seek to teach young people about the basic purpose of copyright as articulated in the Constitution– to promote the advancement of the arts by providing creators with the exclusive rights to their works for limited terms. The theme, that a public which has a basic understanding of copyright law and its relationship to the arts– including its fair use exceptions– is far more likely to respect and comply with the law than a public that functions on lack of such understanding or on misinformation.

TREND NOTE
````````````````````
WHY DO YOU DO IT? Editorial Pictures make statements. That's what most of our customers buy when they purchase use of our photos -- our ability to make a statement with our photos. Your pictures can be poetical, comical or thunderously revealing. They say something. Few people have the kind of opportunity to make their mark on society that we editorial stock photographers do.
We all have our favorites when it comes to classic photography, whether it be a photo by Margaret Bourke-White or David Burnett. Compelling photographs live on.
It's certain that we are not in this for the money - not even the giants in our field. Our industry is not large – most estimates put it at $800 million. When you invest in your stock photography, you are investing in yourself, and the long-term gratifying intangible achievements it provides.
No photographer has ever achieved – nor gunned for – millionaire status.
However, even many a billionaire would rather leave this planet with the acknowledgements and fulfillment that artists, poets, and photographers have achieved. –RE
The conflict on camera: The photographs that have defined the war in Iraq - It has been documented like no war before, with TV crews and journalists following almost every sniper shot and wayward missile strike, from Kuwait to Baghdad. But when this Gulf War is recalled in years to come, it will perhaps be photographs that provide the most powerful record of all.
