TRAVEL NOTES
```````````````````````
Digital For Travel?
If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been asked over the last couple
of years about whether I’ve moved to digital yet, I’d be a rich man.
The answer is ‘no,’ but the truth is that I’d very much like to, but
only when the hardware is up to it for what I do, and is good enough
the markets I supply. For a travel photographer, digital will be good
when the quality is right. I’d love to see immediately if that sunset
was the exposure I liked, right or "wrong" (a matter of personal
taste). Professional video cameramen operate with an electronic
viewfinder and judge exposure by experience, so expect to see this one
day in high-end still cameras.
There was a brief flirtation with half-frame cameras back in the
1970s, and today history has repeated itself with their digital
variants. Personally I like lenses to be as they should be, not
doubling the focal length on a half-frame. New developments in chip
technology mean that hardly a week goes by without some improvement.
So the digital future is just over the horizon for me with more new
cameras that are full frame; it’s just a question of time before the
price hits the area my pocket can stand.
OUT OF DATE?
So although I haven’t even used digital I get asked about what to buy,
and recently recommended to friends that they buy a compact Canon or
Nikon. For them I suggested anything with 4 million + pixels should be
good and future proof for a while hopefully; anything in the shops
today could be out of date tomorrow. As an example, Canon’s digital
D60 pro SLR body has been on the market for just twelve months and has
now ceased production.
AMERICAN LIFE
````````````````````````
Rick Smolan and David Elliot Cohen, creators of the original "Day in
the Life" book series, have teamed together again to produce "America
24/7". They will be selecting 1,000 photojournalists for a project
documenting life in America. The photographers will be shooting during
the week of May 12-18. Photographers are asked to propose assignments
in their local communities, and will have use of Olympus digital
cameras. For more information: http://www.photoaim.com/wanted.html
HOW TO AVOID THE INDEMNIFICATION CLAUSE
`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Some magazines, organizations, and publishing houses for a number of
years have been sending out a "consent and release" form when they
purchase photos. The form is actually an indemnification clause,
which, if signed, can indemnify them of all liability even in cases
where they could be at fault.
Since you'd like to deal with these buyers, try this: place the
following sentence at the end of their CONSENT AND RELEASE statement,
just before your signature:
"...as long as the pictures are not used in such a way that would
shock the normal sensibilities of ordinary people." (You can omit the
quotes.)
This throws the ball back to them, protects your First Amendment
Rights, plus calls attention to their duty to responsibly use your
pictures so as not to discredit you, your model(s), or their own name.
This would be a rarity, of course - - for them to make such an error
of publishing judgement (and they know it).
For the past few years, I have suggested to photographers that they
use this approach, and haven't heard any repercussions from buyers or
subscribers. Seems the organizations and publishers can live with such
an addition to their consent form.
Good luck! –RE
Who Owns That Photo?
Need the answer to a stock photography question? At our website
"The Kracker Barrel." Check it out. Our staff answers marketing
questions; fellow photographers offer their input and experience. The
following is a typical exchange.
I work for the U.S. Postal Service and have been assigned to take
photos as part of my duties. Since I'm the "author" of these pictures,
can I also add them to my stock photo collection and sell them?
William Fellet
Yes, you can sell them. Actually, anyone else can sell them, too. If
you have produced photographs for a federal government agency, they
become public domain, unless an agreement for you to own the copyright
has been made in a signed contract. Works prepared by federal
government officers and employees as part of their official duties are
not protected by copyright. For example, even the Copyright Act
document and other federal government regulations are not protected by
copyright. Remember, though, this rule does not apply to works created
by state government officers and employees, in any of the 50 states.
Uncopyrightable works and works for which copyright protection has
ended, are referred to as "public domain" works, and can be copied by
the general public.
NATURE
````````````
Zoo Life
The debate about zoos being good or bad for the animals that live in
them has gone on for a long time. Just about everyone has an opinion
about them. The fact is, most major city zoos are working hard, with
the resources they have, to give their animals the best possible
living conditions. Plus, today most zoos have active breeding projects
which are the last hope in saving some of the world's endangered
species from extinction.
In My Opinion
I personally think most zoos and wildlife parks do have their animals'
best interests at heart. With education and preservation as the major
concerns, zoos have taken an active part in the planet's environment.
Today's zoos are not just places where wild animals are put on display.
ZOOS AND THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Today's zoos are wonderful places to take pictures. Where else, but at
a zoo, can you photograph dozens of wild critters from all over the
world, in one day, on the same roll of film? Not long ago zoos kept
animals in heavy cages with iron bars. A photographer may have been
able to get close to a Siberian Tiger, but the photos never looked
natural. The pictures almost always showed the concrete floor, the
cage walls, and/or a stressed out cat. Today zoos still use cages, but
they are built to look like natural environments without metal bars.
Photographers now have open areas with short telephoto accessibility
to the wildlife. Sometimes it is impossible to tell the difference
between a zoo photograph and a wild "in the field" one.
LOOK FOR THE SHOT
When shooting pictures at the zoo, try to shoot from angles that don't
show any manmade objects, like fences, in the background. Zoom in.
Close-ups of the face and eyes bring personality to the animals. Don't
hesitate to show people in the picture. Sometimes the people visiting
the zoos are better photographic subjects than the animals. Use the
wildlife as background for portraits.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
``````````````````````````````
"People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I
don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world
are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want,
and if they can't find them, make them."
–George Bernard Shaw
